Presentation Type: Oral Presentation
This practice-based research explores the complexities of mother-daughter relationships within the context of Chinese patriarchal family structures, focusing on the intergenerational transmission of trauma and gendered power dynamics. Through an experimental, non-linear narrative video installation, this study delves into the emotional and psychological impacts of these relationships, using personal autobiography to connect individual experiences with broader socio-cultural frameworks. Drawing from feminist film theory, psychoanalytic perspectives, and cultural-historical contexts, the research critically examines how patriarchal norms have been internalised and perpetuated across generations of women. The study employs video art and installation as key methodological tools to challenge traditional representations of maternal authority, instead highlighting the emotional complexity and subtle tensions inherent in mother-daughter bonds. By integrating narrative, reenactment, and symbolic imagery, the work offers a multi-layered, immersive experience that invites viewers to reflect on trauma, memory, and the possibilities for healing. This research contributes to feminist discourse on maternal relationships and trauma, while positioning experimental video installation as a powerful form of critical knowledge production.
